We Have a Facebook Page

I know, we’re very imaginative. We hired a social media consultant at $400/hour and that’s what he said to do.

Anyways, it’s a good place to have some conversations and interact a little bit more. LIKE IT or else we look stupid.

You can find it right here.

2 Minute Training Series: Boom Mic Operation

Editor’s Note: This is the first article in a series of articles we’re doing on how to quickly train an unskilled person for any job on the set – in 2 minutes.

Operating a boom mic on a set is an interesting job. In Hollywood, there are people who just operate boom mics. It’s their job. They literally spend all day boomin’ it up, and they’re good. Real good.

On the independent/DiY level, you are very lucky if you come across someone who is proficient in boom pole operation. You should probably give them an edible arrangement and be best friends with them if you find one. Never let them go. Never.

For the most part, though, you will be going through a familiar scene: trying to train someone to use a boom pole quickly so they do a decent job. Could be for one scene or a whole day. Could be because you forgot, our the edible arrangements made your first boom pole guy sick. It doesn’t matter. You need audio, and your brother’s girlfriend isn’t doing anything for the next 30 minutes.

So, we’ve rounded up a few tips to make sure you communicate, and you’ll have some decent audio flying your way.

List of Sony HVR-A1U Resources, Tutorials, and Test Footage

We’ve had a lot of readers come to the site looking for information on the Sony HVR-A1U. It’s a great, affordable camcorder with a lot of great professional-end features. You can check out our review of it here, and our tips on using it for a documentary here.

To make things easier, we’ve gone ahead and scoured the net for the best HVR-A1U reviews and tutorials. Check ‘em out!

Warning: We could not find any decent tutorials on the HVR-A1U online, only test shoots and hilariously bad related videos. We’ve embedded them for your enjoyment. We’re going to make an HVR-A1U tutorial video soon. You can see my descent into madness as the post continues.

Final Cut Pro going “Prosumer”?

iCut

UPDATE: FCP Daily has pointed out that this has been denied by Apple.

Apple Insider had an interesting article yesterday about Final Cut Pro. Basically, Randy Ubillos, the man behind FCP and also the man behind the much-maligned iMovie ’09 is back at the helm of the Final Cut Studio team. Apparently, there is a makeover in the works that will bring Final Cut Pro to a more prosumer level, since Apple mainly sells Final Cut Express. There’s been some job postings for Senior UI positions, which are pretty interesting.

The Great Film School Debate

For every subject, there is a debate that has been raging for decades, and for filmmaking (especially DiY Filmmaking), that debate is over whether film school is worth it.

I’ll be up front: I went to a film school. It wasn’t a standalone film school, it was just a film program at a larger University, and it was mostly theory and writing papers. I didn’t go just for the film program, I just sort of fell into it. Although I went, I don’t advocate strongly against it or for it. In this post, I’ve tried to narrow down some points about what film school has to offer and what is doesn’t.

3 Methods for Creating Scrolling Credits in Final Cut Pro

I love the part of the production process where you get to make the end credits. If you don’t do it first (I don’t think you should), you get to do it at the end of it all, and look back on all the people that helped, annoyed, or screwed you in the process of making your piece.

If you are working in Final Cut Pro, you probably know how to create basic scrolling text credits (if you don’t, here’s a tutorial on that). You know the kind, where everything is centered and it just goes up. For many situations, this is fine, but there are some alternative methods to creating some more attractive credits in FCP.

5 Great Video Production Checklists

I tend to forget things. Although I never forget when to eat, I have been known to forget very fundamental things such as the need to bring the dog back in after taking her out. It’s a problem (sorry, my dog).

So when I am doing something video related, I like to bring a checklist. You know why? Because checklists are simple. They are idiot proof as long as you actually look at them. Here’s a primer 101 on how checklists work:

1. The checklist has a list of things to do.

2. If you do a thing, you check it off.

3. You keep doing things on the checklist until they are all checked off.

4. When they are all checked off, you are done.

Check that out. Simple. Effective. Idiot Proof.

Reinventing an Old Friend: An Open Challenge from DiY Filmmaking

We here at DiY Filmmaking love cheap visual effects. Simple techniques like stop-motion and masking, when used organically, can be incredibly useful to the DiY filmmaker. However, it is no secret that we here at DiY Filmmaking don’t love using visual effects just for the sake of using them. We like it when the effect [...]
